Mark of Excellence

The Foundation for Music Education has recognized eight GCISD fine arts music programs with 2024 Mark of Excellence and Citation of Excellence awards.

The Mark of Excellence seeks to recognize and award outstanding achievement in performance by high school and middle school bands, choirs and orchestras across the United States. The top 25% of entrees are recognized as national winners, while the second 25% are named as commended winners.

The Citation of Excellence recognizes and awards outstanding achievement in performance by non-varsity high school and middle school bands and orchestras. Programs that scored within the top 25% are recognized as citation winners and those who scored within the second 25% are given commended winners status.

GCISD Fine Arts Director Paul Sikes said this regarding the achievements: “The fact that our bands placed in the top 25% and 50% of submissions, speaks to the high quality of music education going on in GCISD. This is directly attributable to the amazing work our students, teachers and communities are doing to make GCISD a great place for fine arts.”
