Two Grapevine High School students, Emilia and Sara Gyöergy, competed at the UIL Region 1-5A Tennis Meet, and are now headed to the state tournament! Not only are the two athletes doubles partners, but they are also sisters.
When they moved to Grapevine from Hungary in November, they were unsure about playing high school tennis. Thanks to the encouragement of GHS girls basketball coach Micah Garoutte, they reached out to GHS tennis coach Kyle Apperson to try out for the team.
Garoutte said, “I may have pointed them in the right direction, but Coach Apperson and his staff have made the girls fall in love with competing as Mustangs!”
The girls are undefeated this spring with a record of 24-0. It is an impressive record for these new tennis players, but Apperson says their character is even more impressive.
“The girls really are better people than they are tennis players, and they are great tennis players.” Apperson continues, “They are a prime example of hard work, great character and ability to adapt.”
The Gyöergys competed in the girls doubles at the regional level on May 9 and defeated Amarillo High School to move on to the state tournament. The tournament starts Thursday, May 16, at the Annemarie Tennis Center in San Antonio, Texas, and includes quarterfinals and semifinals rounds before they reach the State final, which will be held Friday, May 17.
Good luck to these Mustangs!
