Bear Creek Elementary School (BCE) hosted their 15th annual “Around the World” event on January 19.
The gymnasium, where the event was held, was filled with colorful flags, maps, globes and poster boards displaying pictures from across the world. At each table, a volunteer shared with students where the country they represented was located. They also spoke about other interesting information from those countries, such traditions, foods from that region, and even sports. A total of 19 countries were represented from Brazil to Nepal. Students were also encouraged to ask questions.
“Around the World means a lot to our students and BCE families,” BCE Principal Dr. Bryan Calvert said. “It allows everyone to have an opportunity to share things they love about their country of origin.”
The event, started by P.E. teacher Jodi Lucas, has continued to grow every year with the help of BCE’s students, families, and staff. One of the reasons the event is so meaningful is because the event celebrates the people of the school, where 30-40 languages are spoken.
“Students learn a little more about their friends' traditions, interests, and home life,” Calvert added. ”It allows everyone to have an opportunity to share things they love about their country of origin. It brings our school community together.”
The event was held during the school day for students and repeated in the evening for the entire community to celebrate BCE.
