On October 10, Colleyville Heritage High School and Grapevine High School cross country teams competed at the UIL 5A District 6 Championship at The Buff in Haltom City. GCISD teams won first and second in the women’s and men’s races qualifying all teams for regionals.
The CHHS women's team won the district title in a tie-breaker finish. The race finished with CHHS and GHS tied on points since each had runners in the top 10. Sophomore Leighton Pillow, the sixth runner for CHHS, won the tie breaker to give the Lady Panthers their third consecutive district championship. The GHS women's team finished as the runners up and also advanced to the regional championship.
“We are very excited for our young ladies to win their third straight district title. That is not an easy accomplishment in our district. This group of girls has shown a lot of resilience this year in overcoming injuries and being without our top runner from last year,” said CHHS Cross Country Head Coach Nicholas Taylor.
In the men’s race, the GHS team won the district championship with five of their runners finishing in the top 10. This is the Mustangs’ 14th men’s district championship in the past 15 years.
"The district meet was a great start to our championship season. I am really proud of our girls and boys teams. Every athlete contributed to our success, and we look forward to building on it as we prepare for the upcoming regional meet," said GHS Cross Country Head Coach Rick Miller.
The CHHS men's team finished as the district runners up and also advanced to the regional championships for the fourth year in a row. The Panthers were led by senior Wallace Bullock, who won the overall individual championship with a time of 16:12.25.
“Wallace's win is a testament to his hard work ethic and tremendous character. He is a great leader on our team, and he has the ultimate respect from his teammates and coaches,” added Taylor.
The UIL 5A Region I Championship will be held at Mae Simmons Park in Lubbock on October 22.
Congratulations to our cross country runners advancing to Regionals!
