On Saturday, June 8, Grapevine High School Baseball defeated Lucas Lovejoy High school 6-5 to win the 2024 UIL 5A State Championship. This is the second baseball state championship in school history. GHS is also the first Dallas-Fort Worth school to win the state championship since Colleyville Heritage won it in 2019.
On the road to the championship GHS played Leander Rouse High School in the state semifinal. Senior pitcher Dasan Hill struck out 10 batters, while only allowing three walks, two hits and no earned runs through six innings.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, down by one run with the bases loaded, senior shortstop Brenton Lee hit a ground ball to short, which managed to be the game-winning hit due to an overthrown ball to first base, allowing the Mustangs to score two runs and win the game.
In the state final, senior pitcher JoJo Kubo would get the start on the mound and would later be relieved by senior Luke Schreyer. The Mustangs would get off to a hot start in the game scoring four runs in the first inning, but would give up three runs in the third. In the fourth inning, sophomore designated hitter Lale Esquivel would get a lead off triple and be driven in with a sacrifice fly by sophomore outfielder Zackary Goldstein to extend the lead by two.
In the top of the final inning, Lovejoy managed to tie the game at five a piece. But GHS would respond to the high-pressure situation, as they have done throughout the playoffs. Junior first baseman Jarrett Boswell stepped up to the plate with two outs and two men on base. Boswell would get a base hit to deep center for the game winner and the state championship. Boswell went two for four with two RBIs at the plate and was also voted the MVP of the state tournament. Four other Mustangs were voted to the UIL 5A All-State Tournament Team.
