On Saturday, June 1, Grapevine High School Baseball defeated Argyle High School in a best-of-three series, 2-1, to win the regional championship and advance to the UIL 5A State Tournament for the third time in school history.
“Winning the regional championship was certainly a realistic goal of ours that we addressed on the very first day of school, and I feel that we have had champion minded practices throughout the entire fall and spring,” GHS Head Baseball Coach Jimmy Webster said.
The Mustangs dropped Game 1 of the series, but would rebound in Game 2. Senior Dasan Hill started on the mound for Game 2 and would go on to strike out 12 batters, only allowing five hits in six innings. The Mustangs won Game 2, 8-2.
“One of my favorite quotes that I often use with these guys is, ‘When the lights get bright, the playmakers show up’,” Webster explained.
The Mustangs ran away with Game 3, winning 12-1. Senior Samuel Kelley led the offense, managing three hits, three RBIs and three runs from four at-bats, with one stolen base. Senior Joseph Kubo struck out five batters and only allowed four hits through five innings.
They will now face Leander Rouse High School on Thursday, June 6, in the state semifinals at Dell Diamond in Round Rock, Texas in a win-or-go-home game.
“They've earned the right to be here and they just need to do the same things they've done in the first 43 games in games 44 and 45,” Webster added.
Pending a GHS victory on Thursday, the Mustangs would then face the winner of the Magnolia West versus Lovejoy semifinal game in the state championship final.
Good luck to our Mustangs on their journey down to Round Rock for the state tournament! There will be a state send off celebration at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 5, at the Grapevine High School Mustang Corral. Tickets for Thursday's game are available for purchase. Click the link here.
