At the Texas History Day Competition held April 20, iUniversity Prep teacher Chad Hannon was named as one of two honorees selected to represent Texas for the national Patricia Behring Teacher of the Year Award.

“It is such an honor to be nominated for this award from an organization that means so much to me,” Hannon stated. Although he entered the field of advertising after college, he wanted to become a history teacher and pursued his teaching certification. “I’ve never looked back,” he said.

Hannon has been a history teacher for 18 years, 15 of those with GCISD. He taught at Grapevine Middle School prior to iUniversity Prep, which was named #1 in Texas and #2 in America on Niche’s 2024 Best Public Online High Schools ranking

Each year, National History Day affiliate programs across the country select a middle school and high school honoree to compete for the national award. Hannon, who teaches seventh grade Texas history and eighth grade U.S. history at iUP, was the middle school honoree.

“This award recognizes the very best educators from across the nation and beyond,” said National History Day Executive Director Dr. Cathy Gorn.

The national award, which comes with a $10,000 prize, will be announced in June in Maryland during the organization’s annual national contest and ceremony.
