Students standing in a line

On April 27, students from Colleyville Heritage High School and Grapevine High School traveled to San Marcos to compete in the Texas High School Visual Art Scholastic Event (VASE). All five students who competed received “superior” ratings, which is the highest rating a piece of art can achieve.

GHS junior Todd O’Neil also received the coveted Gold Seal award for his oil landscape “Vista of the Panhandle!” O’Neil’s artwork will now be a part of a traveling exhibition among other Gold Seal winners across the state. The exhibition will conclude in November at the Texas Art Education Association (TAEA) conference.

In addition to competing, students also participated in workshops and learned about Raku techniques in ceramics, pinhole photography and felting sculptures. They also visited with college representatives from around the state.

The competitors wrapped up their weekend with a visit to the McNay Art Museum in San Antonio and took in the sights and sounds of the River Walk.

Congratulations to these talented GCISD artists!
