Their name might be Mission Impossibots, but Cannon Elementary students are proving that anything is possible as they finished in second and eighth places in the FIRST@ Lego League robotics qualifier tournament held Saturday, December 3.
Even more impressive is that Cannon’s teams were the only two elementary teams competing. All other teams were made up of middle school students.
The competition involves designing and programming robots to complete assigned tasks. The students work out a solution to a problem related to the assigned theme and meet at tournaments to compete, share their knowledge, compare ideas and display their robots.
As one of the top six teams in the qualifying tournament, Cannon’s team now advances to the regional finals to be held in February. Winners from the regional event will then compete in the state championship in March.

The competition is organized by FIRST@, which stands for “For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology,” a non-profit that started to address the growing demands of the STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) workforce. Cannon Elementary is a STEM-focused campus. The program emphasizes engineering and design thinking.
