On May 15-16, Grapevine High School sophomore Chloe Sirkin, won the 2023 UIL 5A State Championship, hosted at White Wing Golf Club in Georgetown. This is Sirkin’s first state championship, and the fourth for GHS girls golf individually, or as a team, in the last six seasons.
Sirkin headed into the state finals after winning the Region 1-5A Championship by eight strokes. On the opening day of the state tournament, Sirkin stayed at even, only two strokes behind to start the final round. Sirkin would face some adversity after opening her final round with a three-putt bogey on the first hole, but then rebounded and headed into the final nine holes at one over, only one shot out of the lead.
GHS Head Golf Coach Bryan Humphreys said, “She made clutch chips and putts when needed. Chloe played well at regionals, but she worked hard on her short game the last few weeks because it was her Achilles heel. For a player to understand ‘I'm talented, but I need to be better at this part of my game to become great is a sign of mental maturity.”
Sirkin birdied the 11th, 14th, and 16th hole, to tie for the lead with two holes remaining. Sirkin’s par on the 17th hole would become pivotal as it would give her the sole lead by one stroke. Sirkin would clinch the state championship with another par on the final hole.
"Chloe exceeded expectations with her state performance. She was striking the ball so well coming into the state tournament and she didn't waver from our game plan. We just witnessed a great achievement,” Humphreys added.
Sirkin's state title comes on the 40th anniversary of GHS women’s golf's last individual state champion, achieved by Hollie Frizzell in 1983 and 1984.
