On Saturday, May 11, Grapevine High School baseball defeated Northwest High School in a best-of-three series to advance to the regional quarterfinal round of the UIL state playoffs. This is the second year in a row that the Mustangs have won the area championship.
“We are excited to still be playing in mid-May,” GHS Head Baseball Coach Jimmy Webster said on the accomplishment. “Our kids have invested a lot of time and effort into getting this far, and we'd like to be fortunate enough to still be playing next week as well.”
The Mustangs won the first game 7-2, but dropped the second 5-3.
“We knew we needed to play better in Game 3 than we did in games 1 and 2. We've got some mature kids that know what it takes to get the job done, and we came out with a little more intensity and purpose,” Webster added. The Mustangs would go on to win 10-2 in the final game of the series and clinch the area championship.
They will now face Wichita Falls Rider High School in a rematch of last year's area championship series, which the Mustangs went on to win that series 2-1.
“This week is going to be fun, and we are looking forward to it,” Webster said. “We need to be good. We know we don't have to be perfect, but Rider is a quality team and we will need to play well to come out on top. We have competitive kids, so I'm certainly looking forward to this week's series,” Webster added.
The winner of the regional quarterfinal matchup will face the winner of the Lubbock-Cooper and Monterey High series in the regional semifinals.
Good luck to our Mustangs in the next round of the UIL playoffs!
